Iron On Patches Definition, What are They?

Embroidered iron on patches, or iron on appliques, are pieces of cloth surrounded by a finished border, upon which text and/or an image has been embroidered, and you can stick them to your shirt or cap using an iron. Explore our patches for jackets.

How exactly do our iron on patches work?

Each patch has a “heat seal” backing made from a thin layer of special glue. This glue does not stick at regular temperatures. You activate the stickiness by heating up the backing using an iron.

When the glue melts, it sticks to whatever fabric or surface it is on at the time. Once the glue cools, it dries and hardens, effectively cementing it to that surface.

The stickiness of the glue will not last forever, but every time you iron the surface, the glue re-sticks itself. Please also check our Velcro patches.

Iron On Appliques Uses How and When?

Embroidered patches are perfect candidates for iron on backings since the patches are not impacted by the heat.

However, you should consider the type of fabric you want the patch to stick to. Cotton, denim, and leather work well with iron on patches, but the patches won’t adhere to materials like nylon, satin, and other similar fabrics. Similarly, vinyl is too sensitive to use with iron on patches. Please see our Morale Patches.

Our quality control staff are embroiderers themselves, with extensive experience in the custom embroidery industry. They follow a strict 9-step process:

1.   Use a ruler to confirm the size of the finished patches.

2.   Read and compare all text with the original artwork.

3.   Check for puckering issues using a fabric stabilizer and thread trimming.

4.   Ensure iron on backing is applied correctly.

5.   Verify the border type and color is correct.

6.   Count the number of patches. (We send 3–5% extra.)

7.   Ensure quality of all custom patches is 100%.

8.   Confirm packing is clean and neat.

9.   Repeat steps 1–8.

This checklist is marked off with each and every order before it goes out the door.

What does this have to do with saving money? The background of a patch can be created in two different ways, and one is far more budget-friendly.

The first method is to fill the entire area you want decorated with stiches in the color or colors you desire. As you might imagine, this method requires a lot of stitches. Because of this, it can also be costlier.

The second option is to use an applique as a background within your patch, then cover the edges with a satin-stitch border. This option costs less while still allowing you to customize the patch to your specifications.
