The upside of this type of leather is that it doesn’t use the conventional manufacturing methods which pose a threat to the environment due to the involvement of toxic chemicals. In other words, it is a more environmental-friendly substitute for organic leather. 

If this technology is adopted in the future, the manufacturer will not have to stock the animals in a large area of land which will save the environment from the adverse environmental effects of livestock. Besides, the leather companies will not have to kill the animals to produce leather.

All in all, a biofabricated leather is a more humane, cost-effective and environmental-friendly alternative to natural leather.

 

2. E-Textile

The concept of e-textile exists for decades, and a lot of work has been done in this technology. Today, smart clothing is a reality thanks to the recent developments in e-textile. E-textiles are particularly useful in performance-enhancing garments.

This type of clothing responds to the surrounding environment and changes its color when the temperature, sound or vibration changes in the vicinity. It uses the power from a battery to work.

On the other hand, the e-textile is also used in the performance-enhancing fabrics that control the body heat and regulate the body according to the external conditions.

She recently worked on textile materials and converted them into electronic fabrics by weaving sensors and microchips in them. Levi’s and EVRNU have found an innovative solution for this growing menace to the environment. The two companies have set up a recycling facility where they repurpose the old cotton T-shirts and convert them into a pair of jeans, of course with custom patches of the company. According to the official website of Levi & Strauss Co, this new product consumes 98% less water than the virgin cotton products. The company has launched a new label of jeans with the name Levi’s® Wellthread™ which is made from recyclable cotton, and it can be repurposed to make new clothing. This entire process saves up to 1 billion liters of water.

 

4. Ecoprint

Ecoprint is a relatively new term in textile business. It defines a printing method that prints impressions on the fabric without the use of synthetic colors. However, this printing method is derived from the old nature printing technique which entails applying the colors directly onto the cloth from leaves and flowers. 

This trend in printing got a new name “Ecoprint” which uses the same technique. India Flint is credited with popularizing this old method and making it a modern alternative to traditional methods that use synthetic colors to imprint a piece of fabric. These artificial colors make use of toxic chemicals which contaminate the environment.

5. Self-Heating Fabric

Self-heating fabric is not a new idea, and this technology is a part of the costume of the astronauts. But then it is a highly sophisticated outfit. What about the layman? Well, Rana Nakhal Solset has found a solution for this.

When the son of Rana Nakhal Solset asked her about a jacket that could heat, she wouldn’t know that she would give a new way for people to warm their bodies during the winter. 

Her son inspired a new idea, and she was quick to adopt it. To realize this concept, she ran a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, and she got decent money from the backers.

With enough money in her hand, she launched the brand in 2015 with the name “Emel+Aris.” She rolled out the first product “Smart Coat” that can self-heat and keep people warm. It is made from cashmere, wool blend, and cotton. Also, it uses the Loro Piana’s Storm System® that makes the fabric waterproof and wind-resistant.

It is integrated with a battery that has three heat settings which the wearer can touch to set the temperature. The battery is just 100 grams in weight which means it weighs just like the custom iron on patches on a garment and you will not feel any heaviness in your apparel.

6. Maestley

Maestley is a product of Teijin Cordley which is a subsidiary of Teijin Group that produces man-made leather products. On April 8, 2016, the company announced that it had developed a synthetic leather which is as good as the natural leather in texture and quality.

This type of synthetic leather performs well on an overall scale, and it matches up to the quality of natural leather in terms of comfort, durability, breathability, and moisture permeability. Teijin Cordley has already begun production of this leather, and it seeks to increase production in the future.
