What Makes Custom Police Patches Hold Up on a Uniform?
Most department patches are embroidered. The seal or badge art gets digitized up front (converted to the stitch paths our machines run), then sewn out onto a twill base. Twill is a tight woven fabric, so it holds the stitches flat and keeps its shape on a shoulder that rubs a seatbelt every shift.
The edge matters more than people think. A merrowed border is a thick, rounded, overlocked edge, the classic look on shoulder patches, and it protects the outline from fraying. A laser-cut or heat-cut border gives a clean sharp edge for shapes a merrow can’t follow, like a badge with points.
We’d go embroidered with a merrowed edge for a standard shoulder patch. Officers and the public both read it as a real duty patch. Simple as that.
Shop note: the fine lettering around a round seal is where detail gets lost. Fewer words, bolder letters, and the patch reads from across the room instead of only up close.
Department patches, like the bulk of what HES makes, are produced at our overseas factory, and nothing goes into production until you’ve signed off on the sample proof.
Sew-On, Velcro or Iron-On for a Duty Shirt?
People ask if iron-on is enough for a uniform shirt that gets washed every week. Honestly, we’d sew it.
- Sew-on: the safe pick for shirts and jackets washed often. Stitched in place, it stays put.
- Velcro (hook and loop): good when officers move one patch between a vest, a jacket and a bag. The catch? The loop side has to be on the garment first, and it adds a little bulk on the shoulder.
- Iron-on: fast to apply using a heat press or a household iron. Fine for jackets that rarely see the washer, less so for a daily shirt.
- Self-adhesive: short-term only. Think a one-day event, not a duty shirt.

Shoulders, Jackets and Caps: Where the Patch Goes
The shoulder is home base, but departments also put a patch on the chest of outer layers and the front of a cap. If you’re ordering shirts too, our work woven shirts, jackets for duty and cold mornings and hats and caps can come with the patch already on. Patches on garments bought from us top out at 5″ (T-shirts excluded).
Already have a closet full of uniforms? Our patch sewing service handles those: the department buys the patches, ships the uniforms to us, and they go back with patches attached. Attaching patches is the one job we take on for customer-owned items; embroidery and printing on them aren’t offered.
Two neighbors of this page, briefly. Matching Department Colors on an Embroidered Patch
Department colors carry weight. Navy that turns royal blue on the patch? Officers notice. Here’s how the colors get matched on custom police patches, and where the limits are.

Pantone’s solid range runs past 2,000 colors, while a thread maker like Madeira offers somewhere near 400. The thread chosen is the nearest one, roughly a 99% match; some department blues and golds have no exact thread equal.
Got a standard color list from an older patch? Send the PMS codes along with the art; it saves a round of guessing. One more thing: a single thread color reads a shade off on matte twill compared with glossy, which is why the sample, not the file, is what you judge.
Hold the sample proof by a window in daylight beside a printed Pantone guide rather than checking it on a monitor. Then save the thread numbers you approved; that record is how a reorder matches the shirts already in the locker room. More tips are in our thread colors matching guide.
One honest warning about screens: no two phones or monitors show a color the same, and the reasons stack up: how the screen is set, which brand and model it is, camera settings and quality, room lighting, photo editing. An accurate department color takes a PMS code; order without one and some variation in color comes with it.
From Your Old Patch to a Signed Proof: Timeline
There’s no charge for design, artwork or the sample proof, before or after you commit to the order. Here’s how it runs:
You send the logo, an old patch photo or a sketch, plus size, quantity and backing. Within 2–3 working days our art team returns the artwork and sample proof. Next, the chief or quartermaster reviews and signs an approval form; the 10–15 working days of production begin only after that. Swearing-in next week? A rush order runs 3–5 working days and costs extra. Expect about a week in shipping; import duties and taxes are on you.
Artwork Permission, Cancelling and Returns
Nothing reaches production without an artwork review, and HES can decline a design at any stage, even when a quote or mockup has already been approved. Certain content is a flat no, such as adult content, hate speech or illegal drugs; read the complete list in our Artwork Acceptance Policy. For police patches, the big one is ownership: a department seal or badge design has to belong to you, or the department needs written permission covering it, which we can ask to see. If someone raises a copyright or trademark claim over the department art, answering it is on you, and so are the costs to HES.
Changed your mind? Cancelling stays open until the proof is approved, though a $40 sample fee may be owed for the design, art and sample work already done on the department’s proof ($75 for PVC, which needs a mold). A signed approval form ends that option: no cancellation, and no edits to artwork, colors, backing, border or quantity.
